Bruno Mars
Unorthodox Jukebox
Reviewed by Dan Emmons
Platinum selling artist Bruno Mars is back with another fantastic album following the multi-Grammy nominated success of Doo-Wops & Hooligans. The December release is entitled Unorthodox Jukebox, and I do not think I have heard a more appropriate name for an album in my life. Almost every track seems like a Bruno Mars version of a completely different genre.
From the track “Gorilla”, over what sounds like Phil Collins-style drums and a full band chorus, to the track “Treasure” which is reminiscent of old time funk records. In fact, there are many obvious popular influences in this album. Unorthodox Jukebox sounds like The Police, Michael Jackson, and Elton John all mixed together. Of course Bruno Mars is not comparable to those artists, but he does a solid job with this pop record. The album is a compilation of very different styles, which makes each track exciting.
The success of the album is eminent because Mars has a whole record of hits and the major label push. Unorthodox Jukebox is a thorough album, and everyone should expect to hear a few more singles coming from it. The message is clear, put on the jukebox and jam out!
