DJ- Kicks
Reviewed by: Sebastian Mackay
A fairly eclectic mix of reasonably short tracks that feel as though they’re designed more for movies and video games than booty shaking. A bad thing? Maybe, maybe not.
The maybe: it’s a collection of 28 DJ tracks that are much like listening to a sample library. The shortest is 58 seconds and the longest comes in at 4.18. While there is some groove and an infectious beat, it rears its smooth and vinyl shaped head from time to time. There’s not enough to light up your dance floor (even if it’s your kitchen table or bedroom floor, it’s a bring-your-own-strobes type of situation). It’s glitchy and electronic in the way that electronic DJ music should be and in that sense that it hardly strives to stand out from anyone else with a sample library and laptop.
The maybe not (a touch more optimistic but don’t be fooled): If you’re part of the remix culture and can find your way around a sample library and some basic songs, this is 28 tracks of happiness. They’re begging to be repurposed, cut in with some Manson screams, some scratches or whatever else your brain meat can come up with. They’re a canvas with a few paint flecks and some opportunity.
Otherwise it’s a cold, lifeless and completely bland collection of tracks that are less inspiring than a kitten in a sombrero.
