I have to admit I have a thing for some emo music – with American Football’s record being one of them. It’s incredible. American Football is a four piece indie rock/emo/math rock band, comprised of frontman, Mike Kinsella, drummer Steve Lamos, guitarist Steve Holmes and bassist Nate Kinsella.
They released their self-titled American Football EP in 1998, and then a year later, the self-titled LP, and it is oh so brilliant. The band takes on a deeper part of the emo scene with the grueling, far out time signatures, and Kinsella’s awesomely awkward high pitched vocals.
The first track on the LP, “Never Meant”, is a true testimony about a couple who is falling out of love; “… there were some things that were said / that weren’t meant but were said… so let’s just pretend everything and anything between you and me was never meant.”
The jazz-inflected guitar chords and crazy time signatures bring some awesome elements to an indie rock band that sets them apart in a special way.
