Since they met at Berklee College of Music, American Authors have had a close bond. “We knew we all had a special connection sharing music together from the beginning but didn’t form American Authors until we all moved to Brooklyn together. It’s pretty crazy because we have never disagreed on the music we make,” vocalist Zac Barnett explains. Since then, they have been working hard at creating music together and, just last month, put out their self titled debut EP.
“We had a blast making the album. We recorded in upstate New York where it was absolutely beautiful and a very relaxed process,” he says. That ‘beautiful and relaxed process’ shines through into their music, with singles “Believer” and “Best Day of My Life.”
“We tried to add a lot of different instruments, influences and sounds to the music bringing in everything from African and Latin percussion toys to banjos, mandolins and modern sounding synths,” Barnett proudly states. Not only does the EP feature interesting and diverse sounds, it also tells a story. “This EP talks a lot about how we’re not perfect and the world is far from perfect but even though there are tough times, it’s always best to push forward and work towards doing what you love,” he says.
These guys are currently touring with the Airborne Toxic Event, and made a stop at Radio 104.5’s final Summer Block Party this past Saturday! Not only were American Authors excited to play the show, they were excited to hit the town afterwards. “Fishtown is a pretty cool scene from when I’ve been to Philly, so maybe we’ll go out that night there.” But that’s not all, Barnett says. “Also have to get a cheesesteak. We usually go to Pat’s but are open to new places.”
The American Authors’ excitement and enthusiasm showed through their performance heavily on Saturday. As the sun was shining down, American Authors opened the long awaited and final event, getting the crowd going hard! They pumped energy into the Piazza and had a personal connection with all of their music and the stories that it told.
Don’t be too bummed out if you missed these guys this time around! There seems to be some more touring in the near future, Barnett says. “We love performing and making new friends out on the road. We’ve been adding new songs to our set and were really excited to share the ep with people in a live setting.” So keep your eyes peeled and your ear to the ground for more coming up from American Authors!
