Three years separate Detroit native Alex Winston’s debut album, King Con, and the release of her latest material, The Day I Died. The new EP, is a preview to her sophomore record, due in November.
“Just by having that amount of time, you’re going to learn a lot,” Winston explains. “Listening to more music and dealing with more things in [my] personal life. I’m more inspired by music like Tears For Fears, Margaret O’Hara, and John Hughes.”
Winston’s material on The Day I Died reflects an obvious influence from the above mentioned music. Prior to the recent release of The Day I Died, Winston released a single, “Careless”, that previewed her new poppier sound.
“I always want to change and grow,” Winston replies, when asked about changing genres. “I’m not in the same place now I was then.”
Winston has definitely been keeping busy so far this year. The new EP was put together in an effort to not keep fans waiting for more new music. “I picked three of my favorite songs off the record. It’s a very personal record [about] depression,” she reveals.
“The record is finished and coming out in November. Just finished a three week tour with Neon Trees – wonderful people, just the perfect summer tour,” She exclaims.
In addition, Winston will be performing on the Rocks Off Concert Cruise at the end of August.
The Day I Died EP is available to stream on Soundcloud or Spotify and for purchase on iTunes.
