A slightly heavier Adam Ant set the tone for his Trocadero show of October 5th, postponed from February 14th, by starting the show with “Plastic Surgery”, one of his earliest singles. Adam played the hits, but otherwise was reliant on the Dirk Wears White Socks album and earlier singles, which was fine by this old punk. Seeming nervous at first, Adam was is control of himself and the crowd by the 3rd song. Dressed in a Napoleon hat and a mixture of pirate gear, nerd glasses and union soldier pants, Adam was not as kinetic as he was the previous nine times I saw him (all in the 80’s), but still made a good attempt at dancing and appeared to be having a ball. Fronting a band that he only introduced by first names, none of which was in costume, he made it clear that it was about him and no collective. The audience danced the entire time, except when Adam strayed from the radio hits, where the Land’s End/Starbucks crowd would go still and text things on their Blackberries. That would be when the true fans would kick it in overdrive and make up for them. By the time he finished the show with his standard closer, ” Physical (You’re So)”, the middle aged crowd’s inner 15 year olds were very satisfied, tired and sweaty from exertion, and went home looking forward to the next time Adam gets it together long enough to tour.
