“My work in the past is sort of like a collage, but now, I get the chance to strip my music down to what really matters: the soul,” says singer-songwriter Mason Jennings, explaining his perspective on his latest album, while the sun set on Wednesday evening. The new album, entitled Always Been, will be released on November 12th, and offers an entirely new approach to songwriting for the seasoned musician.
He explains, “The process has always been the same. Many records are created in a studio, and are recorded on the spot. My records have always been self-made, but this one is totally different. Instead of doing them in a studio with a full band writing together, I took the time to just hang out in my room with an acoustic guitar and a piano until I had ninety minutes worth of material.”
This new method of songwriting establishes a very natural and organic idea of creating music as a singer-songwriter; just a man and his guitar. That idea that is very present within Always Been, and is evident from every aspect. The artwork of the album illustrates Jennings alone in the woods with his dog, presenting yet another archetype of inner peace with oneself. “This is easily the most cohesive work I’ve ever done. I get to focus on my vocals and guitar playing, and I feel like that is what makes it really sonically rich.”
On Saturday, October 12th, Jennings will be performing at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. The dark, intimate venue is the perfect atmosphere for Jennings to promote his new album, and it will undoubtedly enhance his performance.
“I’ve got to make sure that the show fits the venue,” says Jennings. “I’m performing as a solo artist, so it’s just me, a guitar and a piano. It is very intimate environment, and it makes me more present. At that point, it’s more of a conversation than a show.” He continues, “I’m going to be playing some unreleased stuff, and some songs that I rarely play live. I’ll even tell some stories!”
Jennings feels that 2014 will be spent supporting the new album, due to its release being late in the calendar year. He plans to continue the tour and continue to perform shows that will help him connect with his fans.
“I like to think of it as celebrating such a wonderful accomplishment. Releasing an album and touring is a celebration to me. It gives me a chance to take a creative break, and focus on my accomplishments. I’m excited to be on the road again because that gives me the opportunity to bring in some new influences to my music as well.”
