Aussie singer, Lenka will be in Philly on 7/22 and to get ready for the show, we wanted to dig deeper and find out more about her new record, touring schedule, new projects and how that all fits in with being a mommy.
Lenka is most popular in the States for her song “The Show”. It’s that catchy little earworm made famous by actress Kerris Dorsey, who played Brad Pitt’s daughter in the movie, Moneyball. Lenka says “I owe a lot to that little girl. She was a fan, and actually used the song to audition for the role.” Not resting on her laurels of “The Show”, Lenka is currently working on a theme song for a new J.J. Abrams project.
In discussing soundtracks, the subject of acting came up and it turns out that Lenka is also an actress, and she has appeared in numerous Australian series and feature films. On her career as an actress, Lenka told me she liked it until she didn’t, but she’s starting to feel the “urge to do it again.”
The move to music and songwriting seemed to be a natural progression, and even though she is now the proud owner of her own record label, Skipalong Records, she’s not a huge industry type. She follows her heart and sees herself as an artist in every way. When asked who her artistic hero was, her response was Bjork without hesitation. “I’m a total fan of hers, and she’s a huge inspiration to me, I love the fact that she built her own empire.”
It seems that Lenka is well on her own way to building an empire of her own, but right now it’s set around her son Quinn’s schedule, who has a strict bed time of 7 p.m. Owning your own record label “allows you to write your own ticket to tour dates” and right now Lenka is finishing up a few dates on the East Coast, then headed to Europe and back home to Australia just in time for what she calls their “second summer”.
Lenka enjoys connecting with the audience through her music in an intimate setting, such as the World Café Live. So, be prepared for a great evening of music in Philadelphia on July 22!
