Sunken

Another indie rock band hits the scene with a debut album July 9th. Twin Peaks out of Chicago joins the scene with Sunken. An eight track album with quick tracks, a great musical sound but vocals that are garbled and lyrics that are swallowed up and unable to make out.
Sunken has a great indie rock sound that varies from track to track and brings back some of the old school 80’s vibe. “Baby Blues” jumps into a fast and upbeat track the minute you hit play. While “Natural Villain” has a more soulful focus, seeming to fuse a bit with a blues rhythm at first. Finding a little bit of the 80’s sound is easy in “Fast Eddie”. “Irene” even has the quality to transport you back to the 50s with smooth sounds and a soulful vocals. The instrumentals are the perfect blending of guitar and drums, easy to tap along to and even make you want to get up and dance along.
However, there is a flaw in all the tracks that puts a stop to the quality brought by the music itself. The vocals. In each track, the vocals appear to be fading into the music sound as opposed to layering over top of it so that you can hear and understand what each song really is. “Irene” is a possible exception as the soulful sound seems to drag the lyrics easier to the ear. It is hard to say whether it is an issue of mumbling or recording difficulties as you listen through the album. It is only evident that the songs could benefit from a tweak to the vocals.
