Brazilian trio Mixhell breaks into the electronic music genre with this debut album, Spaces. With a mix of piano, bass and drums, this eleven-track album is perfect for drinking and dancing the night away in the hippest club, but not so great for just plain listening.
Spaces has a wonderful dance album feel to it overall, with a darker and more mysterious take on techno. The beats in all the songs, especially ‘Antigalatic’, ‘ Exit Wound’ and ‘The Edge’ really get your feet moving and body swaying. Both feature strong pounding drum beats mixed with lighter melodies. Both encompassing a good upbeat feeling, perfect for dancing.
Then, there are songs more reminiscent of 80’s techno music, ‘Mind Drop’ and ‘Internal’. Both had a very specific electronic beat with repetitive lyrics that make you cringe from the oddity of the lyrics to the vocalization itself. Both tracks can be a struggle to get through if you can’t tune out the repetitive lyrics.
‘The Way’ and ‘Once Again’ a personal favorites, a change in attitude about the album for the songs. Both had a more easy going, fun feel to the beat and the lyrics were not as grinding. As well as ‘Once Again’ taking a tiny step back from the similar sounds in the other tracks, it was a little more mellow.
Overall Mixhell’s debut album will most likely be a sure fire hit in the clubs but perhaps a miss on personal iPods.
