The Japanese R&B/pop star, MIREI, has unveiled her new music video for a new track, “Sell Me Your Love,” a story inspired by Japan’s red-light district.
The inspiration behind the track came from a real-life stabbing incident that occurred in Kabukicho (the red-light district of Tokyo). The track describes the terrifying and sad story of a woman who fatally stabbed her then-boyfriend who had been working as a host within the red-light district.
Just to give you some background information of the actual, real-life event, in 2019, a photo of a woman that was sitting next to a man covered in blood went viral online. The woman believed that the man – with whom she was in a relationship – would stop being a host in the red-light district. But then she found out that she was one of his endless customers, so she stabbed him.
On “Sell Me Your Love,” MIREI captures the essence of working in the red-light district in Tokyo and the terrifying reality that it can bring. The track is the start of a new sound for MIREI in which she’s leaning more towards an R&B/pop vibe.
I love how this track sounds different than most other R&B tracks and has an interesting story behind it. Mirei is able to create a song based on a real-life event that results in a real, sultry R&B track.
