Chicago-based post-rock/ambient/metal quartet, The Color of Cyan, has released a brand new, full-length album titled Agape, which was released December 1, 2021, via Guideline Records, on all major platforms.
The band is known for its epic, cinematic songs, and as soon as I turned on the album, I understood why. The record begins with the song, “Inception.” The song itself starts out slowly but gradually rises into this epic, ambient instrumental track that reminds of music that would be playing throughout an underwater IMAX of some sort.
The following song on the record is “Summer Days.” It’s a great song that ebbs and flows with texture throughout the track. It’s relaxing and ambient, yet strong and heavy. The band reminds me of other similar post-rock bands like Explosions In The Sky, Russian Circles, and Pelican.
The track, “Moon In Cancer,” is a little more mellow, decorated throughout with the gentle strumming of the guitar. While the following track takes on a complete opposite musical direction. The song immediately starts out with a heavy sound; heavy guitars, heavy melody, just heavy everything.
The next song, “The Day We Met,” is an intense rock song. The track begins heavily with a quick crescendo upward into the peak of the song with heavy guitars and bass.
The last and final track of the album is titled “We Will Rise.” This song is confident, exemplifying that “we will rise” no matter what happens. It’s a great song to close out the record with.
Overall, I felt that the record was pretty much cohesive. There were a few iffy moments, but overall, I feel the album really worked well together and created a piece of art that will stand the test of time.
