The up and coming, Los Angeles-based triple-threat artist, Kaleigh, announces the release of her debut album, Predestined, due out on March 5, 2021. This album takes a brave leap of faith, genre-wise, from her previous pop stylings, one that she credits to a coming of age experience.
“The main inspiration for this album is the notion of coming of age. I just graduated from UCLA in March of 2020 and turned 22 years old in December, so I feel like my perspective on the world has changed. I’m no longer a little girl dreaming about writing music; I’m a woman writing music about what I see in this world and how I feel. I hope that strikes a chord with people and touches some hearts. I really believe there is a song on this album for everyone,” Kaleigh explains.
On the album’s opening track, “Weather The Storm,” Kaleigh touches upon some of the world’s current events from natural disasters, the Black Lives Matter movement, rioting, to the chaos that Trumpism causes throughout the universe. The track features heavy guitars with a rock protest song kind of vibe.
“‘Weather the Storm’ is a song that was written to call attention to the tumultuous emotions that were felt throughout the United States during 2020 and echoed throughout the world. This is a sign to the public that as we embark on our journey through 2021, we must unite and stand together in order to reach progress. Spread love and compassion, take my hand and let’s stand together!” Kaleigh explains. Take a look at the lyric video below!
“Mine” is such a cute song about someone wanting to show the man she cares for that he’s hers. She goes country-pop on the track, “You Remember,” where she sings about growing up, boys and relationships, first jobs, and more.
She delivers a dance hit with the track, “Perfectly Imperfect,” about being comfortable with her imperfections, while also displaying her killer rock ‘n roll style on the track, “Rebel With A Purpose.”
I love the way Kaleigh incorporates different beats, and even some hip-hop elements, into her track, “NY Lullaby.” It shows her versatility and her ability to write and create genre-bending music that doesn’t place her within only one genre. With that said, the various genre changes also make it confusing for the listener. It almost sounds like she doesn’t know who she is, and like she’s experimenting with her sound. She has the vocal ability and potential to create a great record, but I think she still is trying to find her way. Regardless, for a debut full-length, you can’t say the songs don’t have potential.
