NYC-based folk/Americana singer/songwriter, Lara Taubman, shares her latest record, Revelation, out now. This record is special because she traveled to Wolfe Island, Canada, with Wolfe Island Records founder and producer, Hugh Christopher Brown.
“‘Revelation’ is about my journey to healing through making music. Following a call to begin singing five years ago led me to a series of fortuitous events that created this album. Music always saved me, now I hope to return the favor,” Taubman explains.
The album opens with the powerful track, “Sound of Heartbreak.” The song is absolutely beautiful in its instrumentation that features various instruments from the violin, piano, and more, paired with her subtle vocals.
Her storytelling on songs like “The Conversation” was just magical. Her ability to combine words with melody and create something beautiful is priceless. She sings about meeting an old friend and catching up and they talk about having a friendship about love, “about the love in the end.” Her voice paired with the folksy melody pairs so incredibly well together.
The track, “Hookup,” offers a funky, upbeat number about a hookup [“was it just hookup/didn’t you feel my heart?”] she sings, while on “Cold Side of Spring” we have a beautiful fiddle opening the track.
I especially love the opening of the next song on the record, “Akureyri,” the little town where she lives. Her storytelling abilities on this track illustrate her situation so well… “I saw him in the market/with a woman who wasn’t me/I stood next to them/I called his precious name/he turned in a roar/like a giant burst of flames…”
I love the layers of different instrumentation on the track, “Snakes In The Snow.” The track opens with waning metallic sound effects and then transitions into the upright bass, which sounds absolutely fabulous. The way she’s able to use words to illustrate her experiences is amazing.
“It’s always amazing when an artist unlocks expression after leading previous roles in their life. Lara brings so much life to her songs, singing through experience and spiritual wonder which is new every time I listen. Wisdom is innocent and experience is truth. This is what I learned working on these songs,” Hugh Christopher Brown, founder of Wolfe Island Records and producer of Revelation
