Rising Philadelphia musician, Jenny Florinicia, shares her debut single, “Higher Self,” out now. The song is a soulful, whimsical indie-pop anthem in which it speaks about “the belief that our intuition is divining rod.”
Florinicia, originally from Metro Detroit, had been training to become a yoga instructor at the Motherheart Yoga Sangha in Fishtown, Philadelphia, when she wrote “Higher Self.” Her yoga instruction inspired the song and is infused with “philosophical yoga themes” and “encourages listeners to discover, listen to, and trust their higher selves.”
Florinicia and her music partner, John McDermott, attended the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. In 2018, they met while working together at Philly Fringe Festival’s The Buried Life (Apartment 20 Theatre Co.). Florinicia was a performer in the production, while McDermott played the guitar. The duo connected again with the “Higher Self” single at Rittenhouse Square Park in August 2019.
An acoustic performance of the track was submitted to NPR’s annual Tiny Desk contest and was filmed by Steven Jon of Oh Yeah Cool Productions. Both versions were recorded at 90.1 FM WRTI Studios on Temple University’s campus. McDermott is featured on the guitar and bass, Mark Urmson (saxophone/keys), and Griffin Harrison (drums). The track was engineered, recorded, mixed, and produced by Tyler McClure, the Assistant Production Manager at WRTI, and mastered by Mike Wertz of Little Cheddar Studios in Brooklyn.
A modern dance video for the track will premiere tomorrow at a virtual Zoom release party and will be available to view on YouTube, Vimeo, and IGTV.
