Ghanaian-Australian soul/R&B artist, Genesis Owusu, is one of the most exciting artists I’ve discovered to-date. Owusu is not only one of Australia’s breakthrough stars, but also one who is set for an imminent U.S. crossover.
The 22-year-old artist recently released his single, “Don’t Need You,” his first official U.S. single, accompanied by the Bart Celestino-directed music video.
The U.S. release follows the track’s success in Australia, seeing the song become the #1 most played song on Australia’s most influential radio station, triple j. It also recently received a coveted 2020 ARIA Award nomination for “Best Soul/R&B Release.”
In other parts of the world, like in the U.K, the BBC Radio has announced Owusu is one of the station’s rising stars. He’s also received radio play in the U.S. including L.A.’s KCRW, Minneapolis’ The Current featured as their Song of the Day, and Philadelphia’s WXPN.
Owusu has become one of Australia’s most-talked about breakthrough musicians since he released 2017’s debut EP, CARDRIVE, which featured collaborations from Grammy-nominated artists like Hiatus Kaiyote.
His forthcoming, debut album promises an artist who has grown-up and inspired by other artists including Outkast, Frank Ocean, Jimi Hendrix, and Wu-Tang Clan.
The forthcoming debut album has been years-in-the-making. The album explores Owusu‘ s experience of moving from Ghana to Australia at age 3 and growing up in a prominently white society. It was co-produced in collaboration with Aussie label, OURNESS, founder Andrew Klippel, and alongside Dave Hammer.
