The Australian sibling trio, the Buckleys, release their to share their new LP Daydream, out now. Bringing the term “hippie country” to life are siblings Sarah, Lachlan, and Molly Buckley who bring their talents together to create some catchy and infectious tunes to listeners.
“When the three of us get together, we love putting smiles on peoples’ faces and seeing them dancing and having a great time,” says Sarah Buckley. “Music is so powerful, and making people happy and making memories is definitely a place that we want to be.
To feel that sense of freedom in our music is also important,” Sarah continues. “People who listen to the album will know that is something that is important to us.” Having some great experiences in Nashville, Tennessee with multi-platinum songwriters really brought some amazing ideas back home to Byron Bay, Australia. The Buckleys also share that Daydream is full of “authenticity and liberation from the everyday stresses of life” which really drives the release.
“Daydream” throws us right into the album with some catchy vocals and cheerfully-driven lyrics. There’s a great range they showcase in this song, and they know how to keep people entertained. There were great inklings of classic and pop country, but they still added a little something extra to keep things to their style.
The trio shows off more of their songwriting skills on their next song, “Glad You Did.” They are phenomenal storytellers and know how to say the same thing in a different way, which is something I LIVE by when songwriting (Quote courtesy of Martin Sutton from The Songwriting Academy)
Everything about their next song embodies all of the same ideas that come to mind when you think of Woodstock. “Woodstock69” is fun and carefree, and all about love and peace which they carefully wrap into one, fine song. There girls could definitely teleport back in time to those years, and probably fit right in. They showcased their love of one of the most iconic moments in music history, while still keeping it current and fresh.
“Crazy Like You” has an added heap of sass, which really keeps their sound on edge. I love that extra bite in this song, because it adds another element of surprise to what could have very easily turned into a cookie-cutter country girl band.
“Wild Honey” is also another song with tons of movement and freedom that exemplifies everything they are as a band, and exactly what they bring to the table. Another favorite off the album is their next song “I’m Comin’ For Ya (Love).” which is the best balance of real emotion and fun. This is definitely a song for a Happy Days Spotify playlist that I could catch myself playing on repeat.
On “Till You Can’t Go Back,” the siblings dial things and showcase more of their emotional side. It adds a sense of vulnerability to these girls that makes me love them even more. This song really shows a more relatable aspect of their music, which is why this became another little gem of the album. While I think the song could have been bigger in terms of the amount of space, overall, the song was well put together.
Another softer song of the album is “Breathe,” another beautifully executed and written song by these amazing siblings. There’s feelings of loneliness and the want of something more, without overexpressing these ideas. “[Breathe] is about yearning for [freedom],” Sarah shares. “But it’s also about the freedom of the music. The three of us have been so grateful and happy that we’ve been able to be free in what we can make, and that we are authentic.”
They end the album with some great songs that make you tap your foot and want to sing along. “Leave Me Hanging On” carries the listeners back to a more mellow and carefree style, similar to “Vibe,” which is loads of fun with great moments of expression.
Closing out the siblings’ album is the track, “Money.” The song is just what they represent: Fun and carefree. There’s a strong rhythmic sense to it, and I think them ending with the same happy energy they started with really brings the album full circle.
The Buckleys are able to have so much fun and excitement in their musical skills that show themselves as cohesive and well executed songs. They are able to take all of these little nuggets of emotions and ideas, and put them together in ways that just make sense. Daydream is the perfect way to share their story with everyone, and it’s really going to take them far!
