Writer, producer, director, and singer twst is sharing her new EP, TWST0001, out now! Co-produced with Danio Forni, twst shares this EP that has some songs that were previously released, but with another spin on them.
Twst was born and raised in Barry, Wales, and at the mere age of 14, left her home and education to teach herself about music production and pop culture in the South Wales Valleys. Twst is now based in London and continues to collaborate and create new music among her new music community.
“Are You Listening” starts off with a beautiful ballad with haunting and enticing melodies and vocals, but takes a sharp 180 with this rhythmically driven EDM side of her. Honestly, it was the biggest shock to me not ever hearing her music before, but it was the best musical surprise I’ve heard in such a long time. I usually take a liking to huge and dramatic changes, but she does it in such an interesting and compelling way that I couldn’t ignore it!
Shining a light on the imperfections that we face on a day to day basis, ore specifically, what women feel on an everyday basis, is “Girl On Your TV.” Not only is it shining a light on the imperfections that society puts on us, and the ones we see within ourselves, it tackles so many more topics that most don’t dare challenge. Her next song “sad girls club but u gotta be cute” is another take on social problems and parasites that prey on vulnerable women, rising stories of anxiety and certain effects of social media, and even the concepts around perception versus reality.
Her next song “Always” is another song that taps into such a big topic for the public today, but no one’s ever really thought to write about it. This fight for a “relationship” between inanimated objects. Maybe she’s referring to her phone? Personal device? Technology in general? Either way, my eyes are open and I feel like I’m starting to see the simplest of things in a new way. Closing out the TWST0001 EP is “Are You Filming Me?” with this same intensity and boldness that saturates these songs.
All of her music has so much more substance than what meets the surface. The fact that I can listen to her songs, dissect them, and reconnect them for my perspective, which can be completely different from what her perspectives were, is such an incredible thing, and she does it flawlessly. She’s able to tell a hundred stories through ONE song. There’s something here, a really special gem of a musician that has the ability to open the door for a lot more music such as this to flow in this direction. She’s unraveling a lot of societal problems and is truly in a league of her own.
