A couple of days ago, New Jersey post-rock band, Saint Slumber, released their newest single, “it’s okay to be afraid” in order to raise money for COVID-19 relief. “I found myself returning home from tour only to nearly barricade myself indoors,” says Joshua Perna, vocalist for Saint Slumber. “It was super jarring. I went from flying across the country playing music to seeing every concert in the nation canceled in one fell swoop… Within 72 hours I had the song finished in its entirety and ready to release.”
This song is an anthem that touches on the worry and fear that the whole world has been facing with this pandemic. This single is strikingly relevant and really touches on a lot of the feelings I have about this whole thing myself. Lyrics like “I’m not okay sometimes, you’ll be alright if you stay inside… inside…” is on every person’s mind. The worry that it might infect someone you love, questioning what the point of all this is, and even about if we can even stay inside until it’s over because it feels impossible at times. There is so much emotion that captures the scariness of this pandemic, but something that I personally needed to realize I was not alone in my feelings.
The band chose to donate the funds to the MusicCare Organization because of their incredible efforts to support musicians in need. “We chose the PHL COVID-19 Relief Fund in order to give back to the incredible city that’s given us so much as a band.”
When they share their single on all platforms, this is the message they shared with fans and anyone who listens to the song.
“our new single ‘it’s okay to be afraid’ is out now. we wanted to speak to the angst and the uneasiness we’re all feeling right now, and we hope it makes you feel seen. we hope it makes you feel heard. we wrote and submitted this song in a matter of days to get it to you as quickly as possible, and the response so far has been overwhelming.”
Thank you… from me, from everyone here at THAT MAG, and anyone who listens to this song. You all have given us an outlet to turn to in order to not feel as alone as we fight through this time.
