The San Diego-based, Avant-rock artist, Sluka, is thrilled to share their new record, Ready To Connect. Sluka is a four-piece alt-rock band featuring Lis Viega (drums, vocals), Alexandra Holt (street can, theremin, vocals), Anna Eppink (bass, vocals), and singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Sluka.
The album, Ready To Connect, opens with the avant-rock title track. Christopher Sluka sings about being able to connect with people. Its thought-provoking and metaphorical lyrics make for an introspective song.
The more upbeat “Hey Oh” is a track that could definitely be a lead single. It opens with a simple drum beat paired with a fo percussion and he begins singing, “in addition to insecurity, we harbor all our energies for sure… fighting off our appetites.. and thankful that we’re still alive. Ohh. Hey Oh…“
“Deal Breaker” has a dark, rhythmic beat has Sluka sings, “how do you deal. with a faker. how do feel when it shakes you. it’s a rhythm, it’s a riot.” The track continues with a dynamic beat that changes tempo as the song goes on.
The third track on the album is titled “Misery.” Now this track is a lot different than the first three as it brings in the accordion. These days you really don’t hear the accordion in many albums, but I feel like it’s an instrument that is underappreciated.
“Rage or Restrain” is a mellower track, much more rhythmic and not aggressive as the song title may suggest.
“V.I.P.” is the band’s single and they’ve released a music video to accompany the single release. You can watch that below. It opens with heavy synths, then breaks into a rhythmic guitar melody. It continues into a dramatic lyrical verse, then changes tempo into this dark temperament.
You might recognize the song “Iko Iko” as its a common song sung as children in the United States. Originally, it was recorded by the Dixie Cups in 1964. Sluka gives the popular song a darker, independent vibe.
Christopher Sluka, the mastermind behind the band, has released eleven full-length albums and has a group of dedicated fans worldwide. Sluka, born near Seattle, grew up in a multinational upbringing — he grew up in different countries around the world with his family — but never settling down in one location more than a few years.
