The 16-year-old pop/folk singer-songwriter, Aza Nabuko, is excited to share her brand new self-titled EP. The EP opens with the track “Strangers”, about a previous chaotic relationship and how things have changed between her and the significant other. The verses are clear and when the song gets to the chorus, it changes to an upbeat tempo and stays with that throughout the rest of the song. Her vocals are strong.
On “Ordinary”, Nabuko implements a folk element to the track, almost reminiscent of artists like Courtney Barnett and Brandi Carlile. Nabuko explains that she’s “worth the trouble baby” on the track which definitely could be radio-friendly on stations like WXPN in Philadelphia.
“Fade Away” is a track on the keyboards accompanied by Nabuko’s elegant vocals. It’s a slower tempo song, then breaks into a beautiful chorus. Nabuko’s vocals are so strong and her range is astonishing.
On “Heart of Concrete”, the track opens with a beautiful guitar melody paired with elegant strings, then breaks into Nabuko’s haunting vocals. This track is stunning, definitely one of my favorites of the EP, if not my favorite. “I am alone, I am broken.. inside I am frozen. I can’t carry it, it doesn’t fit, it weighs, weighs too much, this heart of concrete..”
The “Space Between” also has a very haunting vibe to it. I love the style paired with Nabuko’s vocals; it works very well for her. Her lyrics are sensual… “I just want to hold you close, even though you’re gone, fading away. Even though you ain’t next to me, I still feel your gravity, come back and just love me now.”
On “When We Fell In Love”, she talks about a love that went bad. “You cut me down like a house of cards, you made dull, so you could be sharp. I lay my head down and you played my heart. Now every time I try to cut my losses, your hands reach into my half-empty pockets, and say it’s all yours..”
Her lyrics are so intelligent, prolific, and she is only freaking 16-years-old. What the heck!?!
