Michael Seyer’s Nostalgia EP is a unique blend of R&B, electronic, and classic funk that when fused together, creates a very modern sound. “Nostalgia II” is the song that starts us off and is also the only instrumental track on the EP. This song sets the stage for a very relaxed and free tone that is revisited throughout the rest of the songs.
“Heaven Only Knows” also plays into those heavy influences of R&B and soul with the use of electric keys, horn accompaniment, and a swing-like rhythm. The story that this song is trying to tell is summed up very well in the first two lyrics. “I don’t believe in Heaven, that’s wherever you are… there is no use for angels, that’s what you are.”
“Oh This Is Love” and “I Can’t Dance” blend very well with each other and continue to show the inspiration that funk and jazz have on this EP, especially in the guitar arrangement. Bringing Seyer’s EP to a close is “Nostalgia,” which was a huge turn around in terms of the EPs sound. We finally hear something different from the change in instrumentation, stylistic choices, and rhythmic dynamics which made for a very refreshing sound.
Nostalgia is a very easy listen and is straightforward in terms of the artist’s style. As much hard work as you can tell went into this EP, a lot of the songs had very similar sounds which made it a little difficult to differentiate between them. I don’t know how strong they would stand on their own because of how heavily they seem to rely on each other for continuity. With that being said, overall, the goal of exploring the topic of love and all its nuances was very much accomplished.
