Raider Klan founder and cult status underground artist SpaceGhostPurrp left 2012 behind with his new mixtape BMW (standing for Black Man’s Wealth), and kicked off spring 2013 with a promotional tour. The mixtape was posted via SPG’s Twitter account with the instruction to get high while listening. The link then leads you to a seven step list of directions:
1.Get yo leed
2. Get yo drank
3. Get yo pills
4. Get yo coke
5. Get yo bitch
6. Get Phucked up
7. The blast this shit
The tape itself held true to the artist’s style with a dark experimental sound and aggressive repetitive lyrics. The songs, although feeling especially long, were noticeably more orderly. The sound is tighter than previous releases but his style still falls short of mainstream stardom. The tracks, some backed by fellow Raider Klan members, stuck to his general themes of “pussy-popping” and getting money. I can understand how this mixtape has gotten so many mixed reviews from fans but if you find yourself truly dedicated to a pitch-black approach to hip-hop and you’re one to follow SPG’s given directions, you will enjoy this album.
On March 27th, outside of Philly’s Underground Arts, a small group gathered and waited as the doors opened on time. Nearly two hours later the show actually began, which the people waiting didn’t seem to mind. The DJs had people mildly dancing and the bartenders were some of the nicest I’ve ever come in contact with. It took that time to begin drawing a legit crowd of bucket hats, indoor sunglasses and even some “Saudi Money” shirts in anticipation for Philly’s own Asaad. Spaceghostpurrp shared the stage with his Raider Klan support and didn’t just stick to the new releases from BMW. The venue was as dark as the Raider Klan style and it seemed to leave the dedicated audience satisfied.
