Things got really weird and definitely in a good way on Tuesday night at the Foundry in Philadelphia. Boiler Room TV and Budweiser put together an exclusive event showcasing Philly native and legend DJ Jazzy Jeff. The entire event was recorded and posted to their website in a series called “What’s Brewing…” which features sessions in different cities around the globe.
The event here in Philadelphia blessed our ears with incredible ’90s throwbacks and crazy mixes of an array of different R&B and hip-hop songs, certainly giving us a look into what’s brewing in the Philly scene. Joining the city’s own Jazzy Jeff were:
-Kur: a rising Philly rapper who draws influences from other Philly artists like State Property and Meek Mill.
-Joie Kathos: Philly Hip Hop Awards’ “Best New Female Artist” for 2013. Her resume is packed, and she hails from the Creative And Performing Arts School (the same one Boyz II Men and the Roots came from).
Cosmo Baker: Philly’s party rocker who has put together some of the city’s biggest parties over the last 20 years. He’s a director at the Scratch DJ Academy where he passes his knowledge on to the next generation of spinners.
-DJ PHSH: If you know Philly’s hip-hop scene, you must know DJ PHSH, Matthew Law. This guy has opened for Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, and Mos Def.
The Foundry was a perfect space to hold Boiler Room’s show. The DJ’s table was located in the center of the room which allowed people to gather around for a more intimate experience. My personal favorite was Joie Kathos who absolutely killed it in the realm of flow and dance. Cosmo Baker and Matthew Law were perfect at playing mixes to get the entire room ready for the main event. And, it’s no surprise that the crowd went wild for Jazzy Jeff who never disappoints his Philadelphia family.
Overall the evening was full of lots of dancing, jumping, yelling, and fun memories being made. The Boiler Room definitely exceeded my expectations. Be sure to follow them on Facebook to stay up to date on their upcoming news and events. Next up are shows in NYC, Brazil, Russia and Finland!
