Disguises

Let me start off by saying that there were just not enough songs on this EP to quench the thirst that Maisy Kay left me with. Disguises, the debut EP from Kay, is an eclectic art piece showcasing lyrical movement and raw piano talent. Through her songs, Kay gives listeners a pop-electric sound with complimenting theatrical elements that gave way to a spooky and mystifying vibe from every angle. Being a pop singer/songwriter in 2016 is almost a death wish, however Maisy Kay rises to the occasion with something haunting and spectacular that just might win listeners over.
Each song holds something special that illustrates Kay as an artist. “Disguises,” the title track, is a sweet and innocent beginning to an EP that is undeniably special. The star of the song is the lyrics and delicacy of Kay’s voice. With a beautiful piano and guitar framework, she was completely set up to succeed with an emotional track. “Blood Filled Tears” is a piano driven track with a faint violin backdrop. The song is haunting and somber and builds with every passing second. Power is continuously driven as the song progresses, fueling deep and rooted emotion. The drums in the song add to the force and evolution of a four minute track.
“Enough” is a personal track, but sadly falls short compared to the rest of the EP. The song is comparable to many ‘top 40 hits’ like Lorde and Ellie Goulding. It is hard to discredit her talent, especially for only being 17 years old. Luckily she has other tracks on the EP to make up for the loss she obtained from “Enough.” The favorite of the album, “Sleep”, is unlike anything else Kay has created. The best way to describe “Sleep” is a dream sequence caught in a church choir. Full of indescribable sounds and whimsical chanting voices, Kay was able to make something that is definitely not being played on the radio.
Overall Disguises showcases talent and emotion that is hard to ignore. Maisy Kay needs to keep pushing forward as an independent artist and making the music she believes will inspire and she will succeed. I would encourage anyone to at least give her a chance, she does deserve that much.
