It Kindly Stopped For Me

A phrase to sum up Sorority Noise’s latest EP It Kindly Stopped For Me would be this: An emotional undertow of raw and complex feeling. Four songs may seems short and simple but that is hardly what Sorority Noise gave; front man Cameron Boucher left his heart on his sleeve and his thoughts in the air like breath for all to breathe in. So although the entire piece only totals 11 minutes, for me it could have been on replay for hours.
Boucher stated that he was not sure the songs he put on this EP should have made it to the public, but soon they will be open for all ears to listen. He speaks of mental illness and lost friends in a pure and somber way. The EP opens with “Either Way” and a sweet guitar that sweeps you through almost like a lullaby in the deep hours of the night. The music is so innocently soft although the lyrics haunt like nightmares that are hard to shake.
“A Will” is the highlight track on the EP for the sadness almost seems attractive. Boucher’s voice is a rough contrast to the piano melody, but it works almost perfectly. It is hard to compliment such tortured emotion but hard not to praise such eloquent lyric writing. I envy how easy the band has managed to paint emotions into music so beautifully. “Fource” creeps in like smoke and quite possibly is the hardest one to get through. Not in a way that it’s a bad song but it is just so raw and so real that it has almost all spoken word the entire way through.
The EP finally comes to a close with “XC” which is reminiscent to the past three songs in its sound and melody. However, at this point I know that I am gushing with adoration but there is something just so admirable about a band or a singer that can come forth with their life and their problems and lay them all out for the world to hear and to relate to. Sorority Noise definitely left me aching for more. It Kindly Stopped For Me is a dark cloud rolling in but I promise it is worth it to stand in the rain.
