The trio of Iain Cook, Martin Doherty, and Lauren Mayberry make up the Scottish synth pop / electronic band, Chvrches, and they’ve delivered with their sophomore record, Every Open Eye. Unfortunately, Mayberry has recently been in the spotlight for dealing with misogynists and fighting off unwarranted backlash against the band’s music video for the first single, “Leave A Trace” and being called a hypocrite for her stand as a feminist.
The Scottish band’s sophomore album opens with the incredible “Never Ending Circles”. The track is the ever familiar Chvrches’ sound full of synth pop, electronic, and new wave, but with a fresh take on things. The musicianship is fantastic and the lyricism is even better.
“Leave a Trace” is the band’s second single from their latest release and has become the focus of the online misogynistic trolling online. The band’s music video features Mayberry in a cute dress soaked and dripping with water. The lyrics of the track are speaking about speak about a relationship and everything that was wrong with it.
“I give up on time / Just like you said you would / There are tiny cracks of light underneath of me / And you said I got it wrong / But I try to uncover them / I have somehow left / Away with everything / Everything you ever did was strictly by design / But you got it wrong / And I go anywhere but there / And you have best believe / That you’re gonna build what I don’t need / And I know I need to feel relief / And I know you’ll never fold / And I know I need to feel relief / I know I need to feel relief / Take care to tell it just as it was / Take care to tell ‘em / Take care to tell ‘em all that you can / Take care to leave a trace of a man…”
On “Make Them Gold”, the track opens with strong synthesizers and a strong new wave/80’s vibe. The song has such positive lyrics and vibe. We will deliver once we know where to fall / We are made of our longest days / We are falling, but not alone / We will take the best parts of ourselves and make them gold.
Overall, Chvrches has created an extremely strong sophomore record with a tracklist with 11 amazing songs. They’ve reached star status playing huge venues in the United States and this is just the beginning for the trio.
