Unknown Mortal Orchestra has done it again! On Tuesday, May 26, 2015, the band releases their third album, Multi-Love.
Since 2010, the alternative rock band has been making an extraordinarily unique sound. This album opens up with the title track, “Multi-Love”. The introduction of this song is really interesting. It almost has a sort of shadowy, yet uplifting sound— strange, yet in a good way. Then, suddenly the beat stops, creating some suspense, right before words come into play.
The second track, “Like Acid Rain” mainly consists of Ruban Nielson singing: “La la la, yeah.” But even though most of the vocals aren’t very different, they still strongly contribute to the sound in the song. This somewhat simple use of vocals places the focus of the song on the sound of Nielson’s voice, along with the music that accompanies him.
“Can’t Keep Checking My Phone”, the fourth song of the album, is very busy. A lot of different things take place, many instruments are being played, including guitar, and it contains Nielson’s delicate, raspy voice as he sings, “I’m kinda busy, could you call back again? I’m sure you’ll come back, Til then, I can’t keep checking my phone.” The introduction sounds like the song could be part of a soundtrack for a movie. On this track, you mainly hear the instruments and electric touch, due to the strong aspect that is placed on it throughout the song.
The sixth track, “World is Crowded”, begins with a subdued guitar solo. Unlike the faster tempos of most of the other tracks on Multi-Love, this song displays a soothing mood. This slower tempo helps the lyrics flow easier with the music.
Other tracks on Multi-Love help Unknown Mortal Orchestra continuously portray their genre of psychedelic R&B. Indifferent from other songs that many artists produce, this album is a great work of art.
