A mere four months or so after the band’s formation, GMG delved head first into recording an EP at the Gradwell House in Haddon Heights, NJ and cranked out the tracks as efficiently as possible. Sound like a train wreck in the making with a lack of passion for their music? Well, no. GMG seems to be unconventional in various aspects, this being one of them. Somehow the fabrics of all the music, all the sounds, all the melodies, and all the lyrics just perfectly coalesced for this EP and further emphasizes the essence of their true natural talent. It is evident that this band, though producing a diverse arrangement of songs, still has room for growth and will continue to do so rather than remain stagnant- which is perfect, as fans will be waiting with abated breath for more of GMG’s music. The EP, titled Time to Be OK, emulates an emotional style that maintains their alternative rock style, but the key importance is that GMG has managed to avoid falling into the heady trap of formulated song writing and overused trite alternative sounds, while also avoiding straying too far into the indie spectrum. The assortment of music and sounds that they so fluently wield and have at their disposal drives listeners to sing along to catchy tunes one moment and yell out loud and bang their heads the next. This parallels their wide range of influences, which include Brand New, My Morning Jacket, Metallica, Coheed and Cambria and others. As they so cleverly put it, “We play what we hear in our heads [as well as our hearts]. In that sense, our music is a representation of everything that we have seen or heard.”
The beginning of the EP, released in June, will have you hooked from the start, and by the end of it all, “Crashed” will leave you feeling a little dazed in the sense that GMG has allowed you to transcend through a variety of emotions. The dueling of the drums is extremely intense and will leave you breathless. Though the EP has songs and music mostly written by Tom and Andrew, it was a true collaborative effort wherein everyone initially wrote on guitar and expanded acoustically. “Sleepless” is the epitome of their diverse nature and opens up with a rather unsuspecting and serene sweeping guitar work that is overlaid and enhanced by the lyrics written by Andrew. Then out of the blue, GMG slams listeners with aggressive guitar riffs and dueling vocals that will leave listeners in awe of their capabilities and talent. Overall, the EP has received great positive feedback from the fans out there. Refreshing is quite an apt word to describe “Time to Be OK.”
Their release of the EP was quickly followed up with their first show as a band at the TLA nonetheless. Around the same time frame, they were featured on Hometown Heroes on WSTW, and later they were featured on Jaxon’s Podcast of WMMR, which happened to be the same night they played at the Grape Room. If you’re wondering what the secret to their success is, one is the relentless effort of Saul, their drummer, who consistently promotes the band and books shows for them via his connections. However, most of their success can be attributed to previous experience, dedication, hard work, and persistence in constantly improving and tweaking their music to separate themselves from other bands and to provide fans with something truly original and exciting. To say that GMG, throws down the gauntlet and bares all for their fans would be an understatement. Their dedication to their fans and to exceling for their fans is admirable.
