DC-based dream pop trio, The Walking Sticks, have quickly become the darlings of the DC music scene, having performed at some of the coolest venues in town, including the legendary 9:30 Club and The Black Cat. Now with the release of their second album, Pop Dreams, the band continues to evolve their ethereal sound, combining beautiful, melodic harmonies with synth lines and some straight up, honest to God blues which creates a unique, compelling style that’s all their own.
“Senorita” is a dreamy confection with cool finger snapping in the background and Chelsea Lee’s gorgeous vocals channeling bluesy Mazzy Star meets Etta James smoothness: “On that sunny day didn’t know I’d meet/such a beautiful girl coming down the street. See those bright brown eyes, tears coming down/she deserves a crown.”
“Name On It” has a catchy, steady beat that drips with cool, cool swagger and ends with a nifty reverb. I loved the ghostly whispers asking “why are you afraid of it?” during the chorus.
All five tracks of this EP have a soulfulness grounded in a dreamlike haze….and that’s a rather pleasant place to be, isn’t it?
