In need of some last-minute 4th of July (and one 5th of July) plans? Want to avoid the crowds in Center City? Here are three smaller events that you should check out today and tomorrow.
1. For almost 100 years, the Termini Brothers bakery has become a Philadelphian (and American) institution, a constant presence in the city throughout its growth and evolution during the 20th century. This year, they are baking something very special for Independence Day: a Betsy Ross Flag Cake, comprised entirely of sweet, velvety colored cupcakes. The best part? If you come to the Independence Visitor Center (1 North Independence Mall West) at 1 PM, you can take part in eating it, along with your fellow patriots. Before that, be sure to head over to the Betsy Ross House (3rd & Arch Street) and take a tour during Betsy’s Independence Day Bash, and check out some of the fun activities that they have prepared just for today.
2. Historic Germantown, known as “Freedom’s Backyard,” is also hosting a festival for Independence Day all afternoon, offering a more relaxed, historically-minded, family-friendly environment for 4th of July festivities. Running from 11 AM until 4 PM, your family will have a chance to tour important Revolutionary War sites, make ice cream, take part in educational activities, and even meet Martha Washington and Ben Franklin! The festival will also include Philly’s own traditional Appalachian ensemble, the Run Of The Mill String Band. The quartet will be on site to perform some of America’s most deeply rooted folk music, playing fiddle tunes and traditionals like only musicians who are heavily immersed in this style can. This is a district-wide event, so for a full list of addresses and times, click here.
3. Dr. Philip Syng Physick’s name looms large in American medical history. Most famous as the “Father of American Surgery,” he is also responsible for another, lesser-known, but hugely important accomplishment. In 1807, he was the first to begin making and selling soda in America. Originally serving a medical purpose, this achievement has been celebrated annually in Philadelphia with the Phyzz Festival, featuring a recreation of the original soda recipe that attendees can take part in making, along with tours of the Physick House, homemade ice cream, educational historical entertainment, and more. This event will be held on July 5th from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM at 321 S 4th Street.
