Andy Hinterreiter From 4ARM Talks Touring with Slayer and a Favorite American Food

Touring in America for any international band can be a stepping stone in their career. But, to tour with one of your inspirations is a dream. Australian thrash band 4ARM is currently touring with Gojira and Slayer; Bassist Andy Hinterreiter is loving it.

“It’s a great privilege to experience how a tour of this scale operates,” he says. “Hats off to Slayer’s production and crew. Almost 20 shows in, our jaws still drop at what they are able to pull off night after night.”

But even he had a case of nerves when first meeting Slayer, having heard intimidating stories of previous openers. It turns out, touring with Slayer has been more than just onstage time for both bands. It’s been filled with memories already, including getting to open for the band at The Hollywood Palladium after a 20 year ban. “It’s one for the grandkids,” he says referring to the that night and how Tom Araya, Slayer’s bassist/vocalist, came in after to thank them for being there.

“Slayer are all gentlemen and don’t mind sharing the odd Jäger with us and our crew. I gotta thank Tom especially for giving up his dressing room to us. I think he felt sorry at the state of our RV,” says Hinterreiter.

Fans can expect the traditional thrash performance while 4ARM is on stage. Hinterreiter says his band gives off a lot of energy and they make sure they are spent by the end of the set.

So, what is is like being in a different country making music and then touring in America? Being from Australia, Hinterreiter does think it’s harder to make a name for themselves, “only because nothing beats being physically in people’s faces all the time. ” Getting to tour in America really helps. “Remotely you’re pretty much limited to social media and press.

Touring anywhere is sure to be slightly similar but Hinterreiter has discovered something else about touring in America. He’s noticed that fans are a lot more willing to travel for a show, and that some even bring presents. “Honey Jack, Carl’s Jr. and any home-cooking are faves. That simply wouldn’t happen back home. ”

With 2013 coming to an end the band is looking to 2014 to continue their touring and be present in both European and American summer festivals. “Get in some more Carl’s Jr.,” jokes Hinterreiter. The popular fast food chain seems to be a real hit with the bassist as he jokes about fans coming to the show. “Don’t be a stranger. Come say g’day to any of us or our friendly crew. Buy a damn t-shirt. Or trade for six $1 burgers.”
