We Still Move on Dance Floors

With the doors to the mainstream music scene blasted clear off for alt-folk bands, they’ve been swarming the landscape like stampeding wildebeests. It’s difficult for a band of this type to not be trampled, but The Strumbellas do their very best to survive the onslaught.
With several tracks embedded in country roots, but sprouting into little indie ferns, The Strumbellas prove that they can handle multiple genres. The foot stomping “Ride On” is rife with country twang, while “End of an Era” is straight up radio friendly pop rock. The magical folksy lullaby “Run” shows off their softer side and its one of their better sides indeed. For the most part, however, they do sound very much like Mumford or Of Monsters… Which could be their greatest asset or their downfall. Fans of either of the aforementioned bands will find plenty to like in The Strumbellas, but are they different enough on their own? Not really. The vocals are crisp and clear, like a cool breeze, and the harmonies sweet and subtle. It is all pleasing to the ears and to the soul, but this wildebeest is no stronger or faster than the others.
