Stoked On You
Reviewed by: Stephen Krock
After a listen to The Aquadolls’ new EP, Stoked On You, I have to say, I’m pretty stoked. I was impressed enough with the first two tracks, “Don’t Mean Jack” and “Our Love Will Always Remain.” Both are groovy surfer chick tunes that had me dancin’ the Swim and boppin’ my head like Ann Margaret. The vocals are lovely, Zooey Deschanel-like, but with more of an edge. And those reverberating guitar chords make me long for the beach. Which is impressive, because I hate the beach. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, the third song “Cool Cat” gave me a swift kick in the pants. It’s pure punk, with Ramones-y wails, as the Aquadolls get down like The 5,6,7,8’s. I was sold already, but this made me a true believer.
These dolls aren’t just going to sit on the shelf looking pretty. They’re going to rock and they’re going to roll. The rest of Stoked On You proceeds within the newly established expectations, alternating between beach party and mosh pit. With the lilting, sway inducing ballad, “So High,” placed lovingly in between. The Aquadolls are a sound for sore ears. And I can’t wait for their next rock n’ roll mermaid adventure.
