The Familiars

The Familiars, the latest album by The Antlers, is a very interesting listening experience. Strong trumpets throughout the album give the impression that The Antlers have revamped the live big band music scene. This mixture of such a grand music style and beautiful vocals masks the witty and occasionally irreverent lyrics. At times, the vocals are overwhelmed by the instrumentation, but once the lyrics have been caught, it is quite a jolt for the unwary listener.
The Antlers are very talented in evoking emotions with their songs, the most notable example being “Doppelganger”. The raspy vocals and smokey lounge sound infused into the music is slightly creepy even before the lyrics “if you’re quiet, you can hear the monster breathing” are crooned.
Although each song on the album is rather lengthy, by today’s popular music standards, the dynamic melodies make it impossible to become bored. The Familiars is definitely worth a listen and perfect for listeners looking for an album that is both classy and fun.
